Medicare Made Simple: What You Need to Know

image of chairs

Let’s be honest—Medicare feels complicated on purpose. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re turning 65 or helping a loved one sort through the mail pile of Medicare ads, here’s what actually matters—and what you can do about it.

Medicare Basics (Without the Jargon)

There are two main paths you can take:

1. Original Medicare + a Supplement (Medigap)
  • What it covers: Hospital (Part A) + Doctor visits (Part B)

  • What you add:
    • A Supplement plan to cover the gaps (we recommend Plan G or N for most people)
    • A Drug plan (Part D)

Why we recommend it:

  • Freedom to see almost any doctor in the U.S.
  • Predictable out-of-pocket costs
  • No network headaches

This is the route we suggest for most people if they can afford the monthly premiums.

2. Medicare Advantage (Part C)
  • All-in-one private plans that often include drug coverage and perks like dental or vision
  • Low monthly cost—but comes with trade-offs

What to watch out for:

  • Limited doctor networks
  • Coverage can change yearly
  • Surprise bills if you need care out-of-network

We rarely recommend these unless cost is the primary concern or your situation is very specific.

What’s Changing in North Mississippi

Recently, North Mississippi Health Services (NMHS) ended its contract with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans.

  • If you’re on one of those plans, your hospital or doctor may now be out of network.
  • That can lead to much higher costs or a need to switch providers.
What to do:
  • Call your providers and ask if they’re still in-network
  • Review your plan during open enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7)
  • If you’re unhappy now, you may qualify for a change sooner

What You Can Do Right Now

  1. Know Your Window
    • Turning 65? You’ve got a 6-month guaranteed enrollment into a Supplement—no medical questions.
    • Already on a plan? Open enrollment is coming in the fall.
  2. Check Your Coverage
    • Ask your doctor if they still accept your plan.
    • If you’re on an Advantage plan, double-check your network and out-of-pocket limits.
  3. Talk to a Professional
    • I help people make Medicare decisions all the time. No pressure. No pushy sales talk. Just real answers that fit your situation.

Why This Matters

Medicare isn’t just about health—it’s about money.

  • The wrong plan can cost you thousands.
  • The right plan can give you freedom, stability, and less to worry about in retirement.

We believe if it affects your money, it’s worth planning well. That’s why Medicare is part of the conversation here—because your finances, your healthcare, and your future are all connected.
